Three Groups succeed in Gene Therapy Trials!

The Gene Therapy Study on REP65 delivered by an Adeno-associated Virus 2 construct by a team from Moorfields Eye Hospital and University College, London has been reported to be successfully. Dr. Bainbridge reported the first results on their study at this years ARVO meeting and in the New England Journal of Medicine. In parallel Jean Bennett reported the results of their group at the same meeting. The studies were published in parallel in the New England Journal of Medicine.
A third group with Sam Jacobson and Bill Hauswirth has meanwhile publish ed their approach.
All three groups have been successful within the limitations of their setup. Several questions as to persistence of expression, concentration of virus particles etc. remain to be tested.

The success of three independent groups will encourage further trials an other early onset retinal degeneration genes soon.
