Report by Fraser Alexander, Local Organising Committee
On behalf of Retina International and the Local Organising committee for Retina 2018 New Zealand, I welcome you to the 20th Retina International world congress – to be held in New Zealand for the first time on February 10 and 11, 2018.
Benefitting from the latest digital learning technologies available at the University of Auckland, the congress will bring together people affected by retinal disorders, their families, ophthalmologists, optometrists, ophthalmic nurse specialists, scientists, rehabilitation professionals, supporting charities, students and a range of other interested organisations and individuals.
Through a fast-moving programme of short scientific presentations, expert panels, treatment approach plenaries, practical guidance presentations and social events, Retina 2018 New Zealand aims to share the most up-to-date knowledge in fields such as scientific and clinical research, treatment advocacy and access, rehabilitation best practice, blindness-specific technologies and peer support.
The congress will include insight into retinal research in areas such as genes and gene therapy, cell therapy and regenerative medicine, retina implant technology, novel drug therapy and epidemiology. The congress aims to promote and stimulate research into Retinal disorders by fostering co-operation among scientists, clinicians and key stakeholders with a view to expediting the development, accessibility and availability of treatments.
Preceeding the scientific and medical content , the congress will include an exciting Kiwi-experience Youth programme under the guidance and co-ordination of Zane Bartlett and a small team of patient volunteers.
It is the shared wisdom of those living with sight loss that is the essence of the success of a world congress. Retina 2018 New Zealand will offer A typically-kiwi welcoming, warm and accessible environment. The local organising committee are working hard to ensure that the very highest standard of accessibility is reached within the conference venue and recommended accommodation providers.
