RP Fighting Blindness

Retina UK was established in 1976 and has since grown into an internationally-respected patient support and medical research organisation.

A fundamental concern for the charity is to ensure patients are not only provided with clear and accurate information about inherited sight loss and treatments, but also to protect them from misinformation. Retina UK is committed to guiding patients to safe and reliable advice about treatments and updates its website and materials when progress is made by researchers, acting as a central resource for verified news.

The charity provides support for people affected by inherited sight loss at times of emotional stress and practical difficulty; the Retina UK Helpline (0845 123 2354) and the Telephone Befriending services are delivered by a team of dedicated volunteers, all of whom either have inherited sight loss themselves or are related to someone with inherited sight loss. The helpline answers over 1,000 calls and hundreds of emails each year, many from people who would not be able to access this type of support anywhere else.

Comprehensive information about conditions, signposting and diagnosis is available on the Retina UK website. A range of materials and resources is available free of charge also.

Retina UK has invested more than £16million into cutting-edge research since the charity was founded. It is proud to support some of the best scientists and clinicians in the fields of ophthalmology and genetics and is always committed to driving forward high quality research into causes and treatments.

Retina UK is determined to build on the progress that has already been made, maintaining momentum and driving forward the best and most promising research into inherited retinal dystrophies and possible treatments.
